What does a marketing agency cost in Australia in 2026?
An Australian marketing agency in 2026 costs most businesses AUD 2,000 to 6,000 a month. One channel run properly starts at about AUD 1,500, two channels run AUD 3,000 to 6,000, and multi-channel growth work AUD 6,000 to 15,000. Agency hourly rates sit at AUD 80 to 350, and nearly every quote excludes GST and ad spend.
The headline range comes from Precision Digital's April 2026 guide, which puts most Australian businesses at AUD 2,000 to 6,000 a month on digital marketing services1. The bands by scope come from Digital Nomads HQ's June 2026 audit, which suggests AUD 1,500 to 3,000 a month for a local business on one channel, AUD 3,000 to 6,000 for an established business on two, and AUD 6,000 to 15,000 for multi-channel growth2. Both are agencies estimating their own market, so read them as ranges.
Very little of this is public. The same audit covered 411 service lines and found 78% published no pricing at all, with only 8% showing a genuine rate card. Expect to ask for quotes, often in formats that differ, so the second half of this guide sets out how to compare them on one scale. The wider guide to AI marketing costs in Australia and New Zealand sets agencies next to tools, freelancers and hires.
What does a marketing retainer buy?
A marketing retainer is a fixed monthly fee paid to an agency or freelancer for an agreed scope of ongoing work, such as SEO, social media or paid ads management. The fee buys a block of people's time. Divide it by the agency's hourly rate to see roughly how many hours a month you are paying for.
workspacein.com's 2026 pricing guide, built from quoted proposals in early 2026, puts Australian agency rates at AUD 120 to 350 an hour for senior strategists and AUD 80 to 180 for production roles3. At those rates a AUD 3,000 retainer buys about 17 to 37 hours of production time, or 9 to 25 hours of strategist time. Account management and reporting come out of those hours first.
Small retainers stretch thin across several channels. Twelve hours a month split three ways is four hours per channel, enough to maintain a channel and rarely enough to build one. Ask any agency for the hours or deliverables behind the fee. The glossary entry on marketing retainer gives the term in one line.
Marketing agency prices in Australia by service
Priced by service, Australian agencies charge about AUD 1,200 to 5,000 a month for SEO, AUD 800 to 3,500 to manage Google Ads plus the ad spend, and AUD 950 to 3,000 for social media. Websites and brand identity are quoted as projects, from about AUD 2,500 for a simple site.
| Service | Typical Australian price (excl. GST) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| SEO, monthly | Median AUD 1,470 (AUD 1,200 to 2,500 typical SME) | Digital Nomads HQ, Jun 2026 |
| SEO, monthly | AUD 1,500 to 5,000 | Precision Digital, Apr 2026 |
| Local SEO, monthly | AUD 800 to 2,500 | Precision Digital, Apr 2026 |
| Google Ads management | Median AUD 1,250 (AUD 1,200 to 3,500), plus spend | Digital Nomads HQ, Jun 2026 |
| Google Ads management | AUD 800 to 2,500, plus AUD 500 to 10,000+ spend | Precision Digital, Apr 2026 |
| Organic social media | Median AUD 960 (AUD 950 to 2,500) | Digital Nomads HQ, Jun 2026 |
| Social media management | AUD 1,000 to 3,000 | Precision Digital, Apr 2026 |
| Full-service retainer | AUD 3,000 to 8,000 | Precision Digital, Apr 2026 |
| Website project | Median AUD 4,975 (AUD 2,500 to 15,000) | Digital Nomads HQ, Jun 2026 |
| Brochure website, agency | AUD 7,800 to 19,500 | workspacein.com, Jul 2026 |
| Branding and logo, agency | AUD 5,000 to 30,000+ | workspacein.com, Jul 2026 |
The spread inside each service is wide because the work differs. A AUD 1,200 SEO package and a AUD 5,000 one should cover very different numbers of pages, content and technical fixes. Ask for page counts and monthly deliverables in writing, then compare like with like.
What each price tier covers
Under about AUD 3,000 a month, an Australian agency can run one channel properly. AUD 3,000 to 6,000 covers two channels for an established small business. Above AUD 6,000, an agency can run several channels together and tie its reporting to enquiries and sales. Ad spend and large creative projects sit outside every tier.
| Monthly budget (AUD, excl. GST) | What it usually covers | Good fit |
|---|---|---|
| 1,500 to 3,000 | One channel run properly, such as local SEO or one ad platform | A local service business with one obvious channel |
| 3,000 to 6,000 | Two channels with regular content and monthly reporting | An established 5 to 20 person business with a working website |
| 6,000 to 15,000 | Several channels coordinated, campaign planning, reporting on enquiries | A growth-stage business with a sales team waiting on leads |
The tiers follow Digital Nomads HQ's budget bands. workspacein.com lands in the middle of them, with a median small-business retainer of AUD 3,400 to 4,800 a month and mid-market full service at AUD 8,500 to 14,500. Before signing at any tier, ask what the first 90 days produce: pages built, tracking installed and one number expected to move.
What do AI marketing services cost in Australia?
AI marketing services in Australia are mostly sold as AI search or AI-assisted SEO retainers. Published prices start at about AUD 800 to 2,000 a month for a small business and reach AUD 3,000 to 15,000 for specialist AI search programmes. One-off AI search audits cost about AUD 1,000 to 3,500.
The published figures cluster. Marketix Digital's November 2025 guide puts AI SEO for small businesses at AUD 800 to 2,000 a month, mid-size at AUD 2,000 to 6,000, and a full AI SEO audit at AUD 1,000 to 3,5004. Horntech's May 2026 Sydney guide lists AI search tiers at AUD 1,500 to 2,500, AUD 3,000 to 5,000 and AUD 6,000 to 10,000 or more a month, usually on a 90-day or six-month minimum5. Intelligent Resourcing, a Victorian agency, publishes a AUD 2,500 one-off blueprint and retainers from AUD 3,200 a month plus GST, and puts AEO and GEO retainers in Australia at AUD 3,000 to 15,000 a month6.
Check the deliverables before the price. Digital Nomads HQ found 49% of Australian SEO providers sell some form of AI search optimisation, and none attached a defined deliverable to it2. On savings, workspacein.com claims AI-augmented agencies typically charge 40 to 70% less than traditional agencies for the same scope7, while noting that strategy and client work do not get cheaper. It sells fixed-price AI-assisted packages, so read that as a provider's claim. The guide to what AI marketing services include lists the deliverables to ask for, and the page on AI marketing services for Australian businesses covers remote delivery across time zones.
Freelancers, consultants and fractional CMOs: what do they cost?
Australian freelancers charge about AUD 80 to 200 an hour, and consultants through a vetted network averaged AUD 108 an hour in October 2026. A fractional CMO, a senior marketer working part time, costs about AUD 6,000 to 18,000 a month depending on days per week. Each suits a different gap.
| Option | Typical cost (AUD, excl. GST) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer (SEO, PPC, copy, design) | AUD 80 to 200 an hour; top specialists AUD 250+ | workspacein.com, Jul 2026 |
| Marketing consultant, network average | AUD 823 a day, AUD 108 an hour, incl. super and leave | Cemoh, as of 12 Oct 2026 |
| Contract marketing manager, NSW | AUD 61 to 74 an hour, excl. super | Robert Walters, 2026 guide |
| Contract CMO, NSW | AUD 120 to 160 an hour, excl. super | Robert Walters, 2026 guide |
| Fractional CMO | AUD 6,000 to 9,000 a month (0.5 to 1 day a week) up to AUD 15,000 to 18,000+ (2 to 3 days) | AlwaysOn Marketing Co, Nov 2025 |
Cemoh's live rate guide, as of 12 October 2026, puts its consultants at an average AUD 823 a day across 23 roles, with CMO consultants at AUD 191 an hour and a managed marketing plan from AUD 1,800 a month plus GST8. Robert Walters' 2026 salary guide lists NSW contract rates of AUD 61 to 74 an hour for marketing managers and AUD 120 to 160 for CMOs9. AlwaysOn Marketing Co's November 2025 pricing guide puts Australian fractional CMOs at AUD 6,000 to 18,000 or more a month, with day rates of AUD 1,200 to 3,00010, and Fractionus's September 2026 market report found an average day rate of about AUD 1,900 from a small sample of 13 verified rates11.
The fractional CMO vs AI CMO comparison covers when part-time senior judgement is worth more than extra production hours.
What does an in-house marketer cost in Australia?
An Australian marketing manager costs about AUD 112,000 to 150,000 a year in salary in 2026, before the 12% super guarantee, leave, tools and recruitment. A marketing coordinator is advertised at about AUD 68,000. In-house makes sense when the workload is steady across several channels and someone can manage the role.
SEEK's October 2026 data shows an advertised average of AUD 111,784 for marketing managers in marketing and communications12, and AUD 67,710 for marketing coordinators13. SEEK notes that some advertised salaries include super and some do not. Recruiter data runs higher: Robert Walters' 2026 guide puts NSW marketing managers at AUD 120,000 to 150,000 and heads of marketing at AUD 170,000 to 220,000, both excluding super.
The ATO confirms the super guarantee rose to 12% of ordinary time earnings on 1 July 2025, the final scheduled increase14. On a AUD 120,000 salary that adds AUD 14,400 a year. For an all-in view, Digital Nomads HQ puts one digital marketing specialist at about AUD 105,000 to 130,000 a year including super and AUD 300 to 800 a month in tools.
Which costs sit outside the retainer, and how does GST work?
The retainer is rarely the whole bill. Ad spend is paid on top, often with a minimum. Setup and onboarding fees are common, some agencies charge separately for reporting, and almost every quote excludes 10% GST. Your own time counts too, because someone has to brief and approve the work every month.
- Setup fees: Digital Nomads HQ found ads setup fees of AUD 499 to 1,999 and onboarding from AUD 550, and workspacein.com puts one-off setup at AUD 500 to 3,000.
- Minimum ad spend: 22% of agencies in the Digital Nomads HQ audit disclosed one, from AUD 500 to more than AUD 15,000 a month.
- Reporting: workspacein.com found AUD 150 to 400 a month where reporting is not bundled into the retainer.
- Percentage fees: workspacein.com puts ads management at 10 to 20% of spend or a flat AUD 800 to 2,800 a month. A percentage rises with spend even when the work does not, so ask for a cap.
- Minimum terms: Horntech reports that 90-day or six-month minimums are common for Sydney AI search work. Ask for the notice period in writing.
GST is the easiest one to miss. Digital Nomads HQ found fewer than one in ten agencies say whether their prices include GST, and where they do, prices are almost always exclusive. The ATO requires GST registration once turnover reaches AUD 75,00015. A registered business claims the 10% back, so its real cost is the GST-exclusive price. An unregistered one pays the full amount, so it should add 10% before comparing a quote with a freelancer or a salary.
How to compare agency quotes on cost per enquiry
Cost per enquiry is total marketing spend in a period divided by the genuine enquiries it produced. It turns quotes with different scopes into one number. Add the fee, ad spend, tools and a value for your own hours, then divide by the enquiries you expect, and check the result against what an enquiry is worth to you.
- Total the monthly cost of each option: fee, ad spend, setup fees spread over 12 months, tools and your hours at a rate you choose.
- Agree what counts as an enquiry: a call, form or booking from a real prospect.
- Ask each agency for a realistic enquiry estimate, or use your own history for that channel.
- Divide cost by enquiries and compare with the value of an enquiry: average job value multiplied by your win rate.
- Recalculate after three months with real numbers and keep whichever option wins.
A worked example with invented numbers: an agency at AUD 3,500 a month plus AUD 2,000 ad spend and three of your hours at AUD 100 costs AUD 5,800. If it brings 25 enquiries, each costs AUD 232. If an average job is worth AUD 4,000 and you win one in four, each enquiry is worth AUD 1,000, and the spend pays for itself. The glossary entry on cost per enquiry gives the definition. Ask too who does the work each week, and confirm the ad accounts and analytics sit in your business's name.
