What is a fractional marketing manager?

A fractional marketing manager is an experienced marketer who works for several businesses at once and gives each one a fixed share of the week. They own the marketing plan, manage the people and tools doing the work, and report results, the way a manager would, while being paid for a day or two a week instead of a salary.

A fractional marketing manager is an experienced marketer who works for several businesses at once, giving each a fixed share of their week, and owns that business's marketing plan and results as a manager would, without being a full-time employee.

The word fractional is the whole idea. The business buys a fraction of a senior person, usually through a monthly agreement, and that person treats the business as one of a small portfolio of clients. The difference from a consultant is ownership: a consultant hands over advice, while a fractional manager stays and is answerable for whether the plan happens.

The glossary entry for fractional marketing manager gives the short definition. This guide covers what the role costs in New Zealand in 2026 and how to decide whether it fits.

Fractional marketing manager, director or CMO: what is the difference?

The three titles describe seniority and focus more than contract type. A fractional CMO works on positioning and budget with the owner. A fractional marketing manager runs the plan week to week and manages the suppliers. A fractional marketing director sits between the two, and New Zealand providers use all three titles loosely.

The rates follow the seniority. In the Robert Walters Salary Guide 2026, Auckland contract rates run NZD 70 to 105 an hour for a marketing manager, NZD 120 to 140 for a head of marketing and NZD 160 to 240 for a chief marketing officer1. Those figures are for contractors placed through a recruiter, drawn from a survey of more than 5,500 professionals across Australia and New Zealand, so independent fractional marketers set their own prices around them.

Because the titles blur, compare people on what they will do in a normal week. A useful question: "On a Tuesday when you are working for us, what are you doing?" A fractional CMO answers with pricing, positioning and the board report. A fractional manager answers with briefs, supplier check-ins, campaign reviews and the monthly numbers. The fractional CMO glossary entry and the guide to fractional CMO vs AI CMO cover the senior end in more depth.

What does a fractional marketing manager do each month?

In a typical month a fractional marketing manager sets or updates the plan, briefs whoever produces the work, checks it before it goes out, manages the budget and reports what happened. Most small business engagements are one or two days a week, roughly 35 to 70 hours a month, often fixed to the same weekday.

A realistic month for a 15 person service business, at one day a week, looks like this:

  1. Week one. Review last month's enquiries and their sources, agree the month's priorities with the owner, write the briefs.
  2. Week two. Check drafts from the freelancer or agency, fix the website pages that are losing enquiries, review the ad account.
  3. Week three. Approve and schedule the work, handle the supplier who missed a deadline, prepare the next campaign.
  4. Week four. Write the monthly report: what shipped, what it cost, which channel produced enquiries, what to stop.

Notice how little of that is production. At eight hours a week, most of the time goes on deciding and checking. That is the value of the role, and it means the business still needs someone, or something, to make the work.

What does a fractional marketing manager cost in NZ?

Based on 2026 NZ rates, a fractional marketing manager costs roughly NZD 2,450 to 3,700 a month for one day a week, and about double that for two days. Some packaged services start lower, from about NZD 1,200 a month, and fractional CMO engagements start around NZD 4,000 a month.

The monthly figures below are arithmetic on published hourly rates, at about 35 hours a month per weekly day. Packaged prices are quoted as published, GST exclusive.

King Tide's April 2026 guide puts a NZ fractional CMO at NZD 4,000 to 6,000 a month for strategy only and NZD 6,000 to 10,000 hands-on3, and Kyttn's fractional CMO page publishes the same bands, with a NZD 489 plus GST diagnostic4. The Maestro marketplace quotes NZD 6,000 to 12,000 a month for fractional CMOs at NZ businesses turning over NZD 3 million to 20 million5.

For Australian readers, Cemoh's live consultant rate guide showed marketing manager consultants at AUD 855 a day or AUD 112 an hour as of 2 October 20266, excluding GST and including super and leave.

Production is extra in every row. The manager's fee buys direction and checking; the writing, design and ads are a separate line. The full cost guide for Australia and New Zealand prices that production side.

How does it compare with an agency, a freelancer or a full-time hire?

A fractional marketing manager sits between a freelancer and a full-time hire on cost, and is the only one of the four whose main job is owning the plan. An agency and a freelancer mostly produce. A full-time manager plans and produces but costs more than NZD 100,000 a year before tools.

The agency range is from King Tide's July 2026 NZ hiring guide, which puts agencies at NZD 1,000 to 10,000 a month and freelancers at NZD 60 to 150 an hour7, and Jelly Digital's September 2026 price guide, which puts NZ freelancers at NZD 50 to 120 an hour8. Both are agency estimates rather than surveys.

For the hire, SEEK's October 2026 data shows an advertised average of NZD 106,322 for marketing managers across 386 openings9, and Robert Walters puts Auckland marketing managers at NZD 120,000 to 150,000 base. On top of salary, Inland Revenue confirms the employer KiwiSaver contribution rose to 3.5% on 1 April 202610, plus employer superannuation contribution tax, and King Tide adds about 20% for tools, training and recruitment. A NZD 106,000 salary becomes roughly NZD 110,000 with KiwiSaver alone, or around NZD 9,200 a month, before laptops and software. The agency vs freelancer vs in-house guide works through that comparison in full.

Which businesses get the most from a fractional marketing manager?

A fractional marketing manager suits a business that already sells a proven offer, already spends money on marketing and has nobody senior watching that spend. The typical case is a growing service business of 10 to 50 staff where the owner is still approving ads between client jobs.

Signs the timing is right:

  • Two or more suppliers (an agency, a freelancer, a web developer) and nobody coordinating them.
  • Monthly marketing spend that nobody can tie to enquiries.
  • A marketing coordinator or junior who needs direction and review more than extra tasks.
  • A growth target for the next year that needs a written plan behind it.
  • A full-time hire that feels a year early.

That last one matters. A fractional manager is often the best way to find out what the full-time job is. After six months the business knows how many hours marketing really takes, which channels work, and what kind of person to hire.

Who does the work when the manager is part time?

The production still has to come from somewhere: freelancers, an agency, an in-house coordinator, AI systems or the owner. A fractional manager at one day a week has time to plan, brief, check and report, and very little time left for writing and design. Budget for production separately.

A frequent mistake is hiring a fractional manager and expecting a department. Another is pairing a manager with a production setup too small to execute the plan. A sensible split is to work out what the plan needs each month (four articles, weekly social posts, one email, an ad account) and price that production before signing the manager.

There are now four realistic production options to pair with a fractional manager. A freelancer per skill keeps cost tied to output. An agency retainer gives one contact for several channels. A junior hire gives continuity. AI systems with human review can produce first drafts, pages and reports at a volume a small budget cannot buy in hours, which leaves the manager's day for judgment. The guide to marketing agency alternatives in NZ compares those production options side by side.

When is a leaner setup the better first step?

A leaner setup is the better first step when the business is still proving its offer, has little or no marketing spend yet, or needs production more than direction. In those cases the money goes further on a clear plan and a small production system, with a fractional manager added once there is spend to manage.

A fractional manager's value comes from directing existing activity. With nothing running yet, much of their first few months goes on setting up basics that a written plan and a few systems can cover more cheaply. King Tide's guide sets an honest floor: below NZD 1,000 to 1,500 a month for marketing, it advises against hiring anyone7.

Leaner first steps that keep a fractional manager on the table for later:

  • A written scope of what to fix first, so the first spend goes on the biggest gap.
  • Fixing the website and Google Business Profile, which every later channel depends on.
  • One channel run well for three months, with enquiries tracked from day one.
  • A short paid diagnostic from a fractional marketer, which many offer, before any monthly commitment.

The free AI-readiness benchmark is a quick way to see which of these gaps is biggest, with no email needed.

How to hire a fractional marketing manager well

Hire a fractional marketing manager on evidence of results for businesses your size, a clear weekly scope, and an agreed report. Ask how many clients they hold at once, what they did for a similar business, and what the first 90 days produce. Avoid long lock-ins until the first quarter has shown results.

  • How many clients do you hold right now? Ask which weekday is yours and what happens when another client has a busy month.
  • What did you change for a business like ours? Ask for a real plan or report, with the client's permission, and look for numbers tied to enquiries.
  • What will exist after 90 days? A written plan, a tracking setup, a supplier list and a monthly report are reasonable answers.
  • Who does the production, and who pays for it? Get this in writing before the start date.
  • What do we keep if we stop? Plans, accounts, reports and logins should belong to the business.
  • What is the notice period? Packaged services often run month to month, while Maestro describes fractional CMO engagements of 6 to 12 months.

Where Flow AI fits

Flow AI is an AI marketing transformation practice: the strategy, the systems and the agents that run a marketing function, engineered end to end. It covers the production and reporting side that a fractional manager directs, with Amber Lan building and reviewing the systems herself. It can sit under a fractional manager or come before one.

It starts with a written scope that names the first system to install. Each build is scoped and priced per project. The sprints page lists what each one installs.

The short version

A fractional marketing manager is a senior marketer you share by the day. In New Zealand in 2026 that is roughly NZD 2,450 to 3,700 a month for one day a week on Robert Walters' Auckland contract rates, with fractional CMOs from about NZD 4,000. The role buys direction and checking; production is a separate budget.

It pays off when there is spend to direct and nobody senior directing it. Before that, a written plan and a small production system usually go further, with the fractional manager added when the work outgrows the owner.

Questions owners ask

Is a fractional CMO the same as a fractional marketing manager?

They overlap, and NZ providers use the titles loosely. A fractional CMO usually works on strategy and budget with the owner or board, and is priced from about NZD 4,000 a month. A fractional marketing manager usually runs the plan week to week, manages suppliers and reports results, and is priced from the contract marketing manager rate. Ask what each person will do in a normal week before comparing titles.

How many hours a week does a fractional marketing manager work?

Most small business engagements are one or two days a week, which is roughly 35 to 70 hours a month. Some start with a short diagnostic, then settle into a fixed day. Below about half a day a week the role tends to become advice only, because there is not enough time to manage suppliers, check the work and report on it.

What does a fractional marketing manager cost in New Zealand?

Robert Walters' 2026 salary guide puts Auckland contract marketing managers at NZD 70 to 105 an hour, which works out at about NZD 2,450 to 3,700 a month for one day a week. Published NZ packages start lower, such as Flex Marketing from NZD 1,200 plus GST a month as of October 2026. Fractional CMO bands run NZD 4,000 to 10,000 a month or more.

Can a fractional marketing manager become a full-time hire later?

Yes, and it is a sensible path. A fractional manager builds the plan and the reporting, which gives the business a clear job description and a real workload to hire against. Some fractional managers take the full-time role themselves; others help recruit and hand over. Agree how a conversion would work at the start, including any placement fee.

Does a fractional marketing manager do the marketing work themselves?

Some do part of it, but the time is limited. One day a week covers planning, briefing, checking and reporting, with a little production. The writing, design, ads and social posting usually sit with freelancers, an agency, an in-house coordinator or AI systems that the manager directs. Budget for that production separately from the manager's fee.

Is a fractional marketing manager worth it for a small business?

It is worth it when the business has a working offer, some marketing spend already going out and nobody senior to own it. In that case the manager stops waste and gives the spend direction. A business still testing its offer, or with very little budget for production, usually gets more from a written plan and a lean setup first.
