What counts as a marketing agency alternative?

A marketing agency alternative is any way of getting your marketing done without a full-service agency retainer. In New Zealand the realistic options are your own time with AI tools, a freelancer, a fractional marketing manager or CMO, a specialist package, an AI-led service, or a hire. Each one buys a different mix of judgment and hours.

The reason owners look is usually cost. Jelly Digital's September 2026 NZ guide puts full-service retainers at NZD 4,000 to 10,000 or more a month1, before GST and ad spend. For a business of 5 to 50 staff that is often more than the marketing needs, and the guide to what a marketing agency costs in NZ breaks that number down.

Most small businesses already use some outside help. LocaliQ's December 2025 survey of more than 730 small businesses, mostly in the US and Canada, found 60% work with at least one marketing partner2. The question is which kind of partner, and how much of the work stays with you.

The alternatives side by side

The options range from DIY at the cost of your own hours to an in-house hire at NZD 55,000 to 150,000 a year. In between, freelancers, fractional managers, specialist packages and AI-led services each cost roughly NZD 500 to 6,000 a month in New Zealand, depending on scope and seniority.

The full-service agency is the benchmark the others are measured against, at NZD 4,000 to 10,000 or more a month. The sections below give the source for each range and what to ask before you commit.

Doing it yourself with AI tools

Doing your own marketing with AI tools costs the least in cash and the most in your time. It works when the owner or a staff member has a fixed few hours each week and one channel to focus on, such as a Google Business Profile or a monthly email. It tends to stall in the busy season.

The time is real. LocaliQ's same survey found 53% of small business respondents spend 1 to 10 hours a week on marketing. AI tools shorten the writing and design steps inside those hours, and they do less for the planning and the follow-through, which is where DIY marketing usually stops.

A few habits make DIY hold up. Pick one channel and one measure, block the same slot every week, and keep a written list of what you post and what came back. The free agent templates give you starting structures for common jobs, and the cost guide for AI marketing in Australia and New Zealand prices the tool stack. When a month passes with nothing shipped because you were serving customers, it is time to buy help.

Hiring a freelance marketer

A freelancer suits a business with one clear marketing job, such as a website rewrite, a Google Ads account or a content calendar. New Zealand freelancers charge about NZD 50 to 150 an hour or NZD 500 to 3,000 a month on retainer, which is usually below agency rates for the same hour.

Two Auckland agencies give overlapping ranges. King Tide Marketing's July 2026 guide puts NZ freelancers at NZD 60 to 150 an hour or NZD 500 to 3,000 a month, and consultants at NZD 150 to 250 an hour3, while Jelly Digital puts freelancers at NZD 50 to 120 an hour. Experience and specialism explain most of the spread.

The limit is breadth. One person is rarely strong at SEO, paid ads, copy and design all at once, and a business that needs four skills can end up managing four freelancers. Ask for samples in your industry, a written scope with a fixed price or an hours cap, and what happens to the work when they go on holiday. The agency vs freelancer vs in-house comparison sets the freelancer against the other two models in detail.

A fractional marketing manager or fractional CMO

A fractional marketing manager is a marketer who runs your marketing for a set number of days or hours each month, planning and doing the work. A fractional CMO is more senior and mostly sets direction. Published NZ prices start near NZD 1,200 a month for the first and NZD 4,000 a month for the second.

As of October 2026, Flex Marketing in Auckland lists outsourced marketing and fractional senior marketing manager packages from NZD 1,200 plus GST a month4. For an hourly benchmark, Robert Walters' 2026 salary guide puts Auckland contract rates for a marketing manager at NZD 70 to 105 an hour and a CMO at NZD 160 to 2405. Those are placed contractors, so independent fractional rates can sit either side.

At the senior end, Kyttn prices a NZ fractional CMO at NZD 4,000 to 6,000 a month for strategy only and NZD 6,000 to 10,000 or more with execution, with a NZD 489 plus GST diagnostic6, the same bands King Tide publishes. A fractional CMO pays off when you already have people to do the work. If nobody will execute the plan, a hands-on manager is the better buy. The fractional marketing manager guide goes deeper, and the glossary defines a fractional marketing manager in one line.

Specialist and productised packages

A specialist package buys one channel at a fixed monthly price, usually SEO, social media or Google Ads. Published New Zealand SEO packages ran from about NZD 499 to 2,460 or more a month plus GST as of October 2026. They suit a business that knows which channel brings its customers and wants that one done consistently.

These are the easiest option to compare because the price is on the page. OnlineNZ lists SEO programmes at NZD 499 to 1,999 a month and social management at NZD 149 to 349 a month, on one month's notice7. Clickthrough lists SEO from NZD 960 a month for a small business site of 5 to 10 pages8, and The SEO Guy lists an NZD 795 a month retainer with a six-month minimum9.

The fixed scope is the strength and the limit. A package does what it lists, and anything outside it, such as a new landing page or a campaign for a slow month, is extra. Read the inclusions line by line, check the minimum term, and confirm the reporting shows enquiries as well as rankings.

An in-house marketing hire

An in-house hire gives you a person inside the business every week, which suits a company with steady work across several channels and someone to manage them. In New Zealand, salaries run from about NZD 55,000 for a coordinator to NZD 150,000 for an Auckland marketing manager, plus KiwiSaver, ACC levies and overheads.

The salary data spans employer adverts and recruiter placements. SEEK's October 2026 data shows an advertised average of NZD 106,322 for a marketing manager in the marketing and communications industry, across 386 openings10, and NZD 61,498 for a marketing coordinator across 371 openings11. Robert Walters puts Auckland marketing managers at NZD 120,000 to 150,000, and King Tide puts coordinators at NZD 55,000 to 70,000.

On top of salary, Inland Revenue lifted the default employer KiwiSaver contribution from 3% to 3.5% on 1 April 2026, rising to 4% on 1 April 202812. King Tide adds about 20% for tools, training and recruitment. A first hire is often a coordinator, which brings energy and hours but rarely strategy, so plan who will set direction.

AI-led marketing services

An AI-led marketing service installs software systems and AI agents that do the production work of marketing, with a person reviewing what goes out. Published New Zealand examples cost about NZD 500 to 1,000 a month plus a setup fee. They suit a business where someone can spend an hour or so a week approving work.

The category is new, and scopes vary widely. As of October 2026, Growin, a NZ AI marketing agency, lists a Launch package at NZD 1,500 setup plus NZD 500 a month and a Foundation package at NZD 4,000 one-off, plus GST13, scoped around ads and lead intake. Flow AI's contract builds are described further down.

Before you buy any of them, ask four things. Which work does software do and which does a person check? Who approves anything published under your business name? Do you own the accounts, content and data? How do you leave, and what do you keep? A service that shows its working before you pay is easier to judge than one that only describes outcomes. The definition of an AI marketing agent explains what the software side should do.

How to choose the right alternative

Choose by answering four questions: how many hours a week you or a staff member can give marketing, how many channels genuinely bring customers, whether anyone in-house can review work, and what monthly budget you can hold for six months. The answers usually point to one or two options from the table above.

  1. Under NZD 1,000 a month and a few hours a week of your own: DIY with tools, plus a freelancer for one defined project.
  2. One channel that clearly matters: a specialist package or a freelancer on that channel.
  3. Several channels and nobody to own them: a fractional marketing manager or an AI-led service with a named reviewer.
  4. A team that does the work but lacks direction: a fractional CMO.
  5. Steady weekly work across channels and a budget for a salary: an in-house hire, often with a specialist package alongside.
  6. Several channels at once, a sales team waiting on leads and NZD 4,000 or more a month: a full-service agency remains the right call.

Then compare your shortlist on cost per enquiry: the total monthly cost, including ad spend and a value for your own hours, divided by the genuine enquiries it produces. After three months, recalculate with real numbers and keep the option that wins.

Where Flow AI fits

Flow AI is an AI marketing transformation practice: the strategy, the systems and the agents that run a marketing function, engineered end to end. A written scope names the first system to build, and each build is priced per project.

It is one of the AI-led options, and it suits a business with someone who can review work weekly. Amber Lan builds and runs the systems herself, so there is no account team, and ad spend is separate. To see where you stand first, the free AI-readiness benchmark needs no email.

The short version

The alternatives to a full-service agency in New Zealand are DIY with AI tools, a freelancer at NZD 50 to 150 an hour, a fractional manager from about NZD 1,200 a month, a fractional CMO from NZD 4,000, a specialist package from about NZD 500, an AI-led service, or a hire on NZD 55,000 to 150,000 a year.

Match the option to your hours, your channels and whether someone can review the work, then compare the shortlist on cost per enquiry. An agency is still the right buy for coordinated multi-channel growth with the budget behind it.

Questions owners ask

What is the cheapest alternative to a marketing agency?

Doing it yourself with AI tools is the cheapest in cash, because you pay only for subscriptions. It is rarely the cheapest in total, since your hours have a cost and marketing tends to stop in your busiest months. For a business that cannot spend NZD 1,000 a month on outside help, it is still the right place to start, ideally with one channel and a fixed weekly slot.

Is a freelancer cheaper than a marketing agency in NZ?

Usually, per hour. New Zealand freelancers charge about NZD 50 to 150 an hour against NZD 95 to 200 for agencies, according to Jelly Digital and King Tide Marketing. A freelancer covers one or two skills well, though, so a business needing several channels may end up hiring two or three freelancers and managing them itself, which narrows the gap.

What does a fractional marketing manager cost in NZ?

Published NZ prices start from about NZD 1,200 plus GST a month for a part-time senior marketing manager, as of October 2026. Placed contractors in Auckland earn NZD 70 to 105 an hour at marketing manager level, per Robert Walters' 2026 guide. A fractional CMO, which is more senior and more strategic, runs NZD 4,000 to 10,000 or more a month.

When is a full-service agency still the right choice?

An agency is the right choice when you need several channels running together every week, a sales team is waiting on leads, and the budget is there to fund NZD 4,000 or more a month plus ad spend. It is also a good fit when you need specialist work such as large media buying or a rebrand that no single freelancer or part-time marketer could cover.

Are AI-led marketing services reliable?

They are a newer category, so judge each one on what it shows you. Ask which work is done by software and which by a person, who approves anything published under your name, whether you own the accounts and content, and how you leave. A service that can show its working before you pay is easier to assess than one that only describes outcomes.

Can I switch from an agency to an alternative mid-contract?

Check your notice period first. Published NZ terms range from one month's notice to six-month minimums. Before you switch, make sure the ad accounts, analytics, website logins and content files are in your business's name, so the next provider starts from your history. Running the new option on one channel for a month before the agency's notice ends reduces the gap.
