What is an AI marketing agency?
An AI marketing agency is a marketing provider whose delivery runs on AI systems it builds and operates, with people setting direction and reviewing the output. In New Zealand the label is used broadly, so two agencies with the same title can sell very different things, and the useful question is what the AI does for you.
An AI marketing agency is a marketing provider whose delivery runs on AI systems it builds and operates, such as agents, automations and models, with people setting direction and reviewing the output before it reaches customers.
The demand behind the label is real. LocaliQ's December 2025 trends report, from 730+ small business owners and marketers (74% in the US or Canada), found nearly 60% using AI for some marketing and 60% working with at least one marketing partner1. Owners already use AI themselves and already buy help, so agencies have added AI to the name. What sits behind the name varies.
The cost guide for Australia and New Zealand covers the wider price picture. This page covers the decision.
What does an AI marketing agency do in practice?
In practice an AI marketing agency in NZ falls into one of five types: a traditional agency using AI tools internally, an AI tool installer, a productised AI-led package, an AI search or AEO specialist, or a setup-and-train consultancy. Each type suits a different business, and some agencies combine two.
| Type | What you get | How it is usually priced | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional agency with AI tools | The same retainer services, produced faster inside the agency | Monthly retainer, often hours based | Owners happy with an agency model who want more output for the same fee |
| AI tool installer | Chatbots, AI receptionists, automated follow-up on a software platform | Setup fee plus a monthly platform fee | Businesses losing enquiries to slow replies |
| Productised AI-led package | A fixed scope (ads, landing pages, lead intake, a dashboard) run by the agency's systems | Fixed setup plus fixed monthly | Owners who want a clear price for one outcome |
| AI search or AEO specialist | Site structure, schema and content so AI answers mention the business | Project fee or SEO-style monthly | Businesses customers research before calling |
| Setup and train | AI workflows installed in your own tools, with your team trained to run them | Project fee, sometimes a support plan | Businesses with staff who have the hours but lack the method |
Most owners asking "what does an AI marketing agency do" have the third or fourth type in mind: marketing that runs on a system and costs less than people-hours. The first type is the most common in practice, and it can be a perfectly good agency. It is simply a different purchase.
How can you tell real AI systems from an AI label?
You can tell real AI systems from a label by asking to see a system run, checking whether the price and speed reflect it, and confirming what you keep if you leave. An agency running real systems can show inputs, outputs and the review step in a few minutes. A label usually leads to a capability deck.
Five checks that take one meeting:
- Show me it running. Ask for a live or recorded run on a real business: what it read, what it produced, who approved it. Screenshots of a tool's home screen are not a system.
- Show me the pricing logic. If the work runs on systems, the price usually reflects output or scope. A retainer billed in hours at the usual agency rate suggests the AI saves the agency time, which is fine, but the saving stays with the agency.
- Show me where the human sits. Someone should approve anything published under your name, any customer contact and any spend. If nobody reviews, that is a risk. If everything waits for a meeting, the system is slower than it looks.
- Show me what I keep. Pages, schema, tracking, content and automations should live on your accounts. Anything that disappears when you cancel was rented.
- Show me the report. Enquiries, their sources, cost per enquiry and what to stop. Follower counts and impressions alone tell you little.
The same checks apply to any provider selling an AI marketing agent. The guide to AI marketing agents sets out what a complete one covers.
What does an AI marketing agency cost in NZ?
Published prices for NZ AI marketing agencies are rare. One productised package lists NZD 1,500 setup plus NZD 500 a month plus GST as of October 2026. General NZ agency retainers run from about NZD 500 a month for one channel to NZD 10,000 or more for full service, so the AI label tells you little about price.
The one clear NZD example: Growin's price page listed a Launch package at NZD 1,500 setup plus NZD 500 a month plus GST, and a Foundation package at NZD 4,000 plus GST one-off, as of October 20262. Launch covers ad campaigns, landing pages, lead capture and a performance dashboard, so its scope is ads and lead intake, with the rest of the marketing left to you. Among the NZ pages ranking for "ai marketing agency nz" in early October 2026, it was the only one showing NZD prices.
For comparison, traditional retainers in NZ:
- Jelly Digital's September 2026 price guide puts NZ retainers at NZD 500 to 1,500 a month for one channel, NZD 1,500 to 4,000 for multi-channel and NZD 4,000 to 10,000+ for full service3.
- Published NZ SEO packages, as of October 2026, run from about NZD 500 to 2,500 a month plus GST across OnlineNZ's packages from NZD 499 a month4, The SEO Guy's retainers at NZD 795 and 1,495 a month5 and Clickthrough's packages from NZD 960 to 2,460+ a month6.
Hidden pricing is normal across the region. A June 2026 audit by Digital Nomads HQ of 411 service lines across 140 Australian agencies found 78% publish no pricing7. Ask every shortlisted agency for a written price and scope before the second meeting. The guide to marketing agency costs in NZ breaks the retainers down by service.
What should an AI SEO or AEO agency deliver?
An AI SEO or AEO agency should deliver changes that help AI answers quote your business: clear question-and-answer pages, schema markup, consistent business details across the web, and a report on which AI answers now mention you. The work sits on your own site and stays there when the engagement ends.
Answer engine optimisation is a young field, and the research behind it is still early. Aggarwal and colleagues' KDD 2024 paper on generative engine optimisation found content changes could lift visibility in generative engine answers by up to 40%8, tested on a research benchmark. That is a reason to take the work seriously, and also a reason to be wary of any agency promising a guaranteed AI ranking.
When comparing the "best AEO agency" candidates, look for four things: their own business appears in AI answers for their own category, they explain every change in plain language, they test a fixed set of customer questions before and after, and they start with a fixed-scope project. The guide to answer engine optimisation and AEO vs SEO vs GEO explain what the work involves.
What should you ask before you sign?
Before you sign, ask what the agency's systems read, what they produce each month, who reviews the work, what you keep, how results are reported and how you leave. Clear written answers to those questions protect you better than any contract clause, and a good agency will welcome them.
Value is where client relationships tend to break. Setup's 2025 Marketing Relationship Survey found 61% of clients who ended an agency relationship cited dissatisfaction with value, up from 36% in 20249, though from only about 100 responses, mostly larger US brands. Questions that test value early:
- What will exist at the end of month one that does not exist today?
- Which of our numbers will you report, and how often?
- Which tasks are done by your systems, and which by people?
- Who approves claims, prices and guarantees before they go out?
- Which accounts and files are in our name from day one?
- What is the minimum term and the notice period?
- What would make you tell us to stop spending on a channel?
How does an AI marketing agency compare with a freelancer, a hire or an AI agent?
An AI marketing agency suits multi-channel work at a fixed price. A freelancer suits one clear skill. A full-time hire suits a full week of marketing work. An AI marketing agent with human review suits a business that wants systems it owns running every week, with a person checking before anything ships.
| Option | Typical NZ cost (2026) | Who decides | What you keep | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AI marketing agency | From about NZD 500 a month plus setup (published example) | The agency proposes, you approve | Varies; ask before signing | Several channels need to run and nobody inside has the hours |
| Traditional agency | NZD 500 to 10,000+ a month | The agency proposes, you approve | Deliverables, rarely the process | You want a team and a single contact |
| Freelancer | NZD 50 to 150 an hour | You | The work you paid for | One clear job, such as ads or writing |
| Full-time marketing manager | NZD 106,000 to 150,000 a year base, plus on-costs | The hire, with you | Everything, while they stay | Marketing is a full-time job every week |
| AI marketing agent with human review | A one-time install plus a monthly run | The agent proposes, a person reviews, you approve | The systems, pages and records on your accounts | You want marketing that runs weekly and builds assets you own |
Freelancer rates come from King Tide's July 2026 guide (NZD 60 to 150 an hour)10 and Jelly Digital (NZD 50 to 120). The hire range runs from SEEK's October 2026 advertised average of NZD 106,322 for marketing managers11 to Robert Walters' 2026 Auckland band of NZD 120,000 to 150,00012, and Inland Revenue confirms employer KiwiSaver is 3.5% from 1 April 202613. If you need a senior person to direct whichever option you choose, the fractional marketing manager guide covers that role, and the agency vs freelancer vs in-house guide goes deeper on the human options.
When does a simpler setup serve you better?
A simpler setup serves you better when your work mostly comes from referrals, you only need one channel, you or a staff member have a few hours a week to run it, or your marketing budget is below about NZD 1,000 a month. In those cases AI tools, one freelancer or a written plan go further.
Four common cases:
- Referral-led businesses. LocaliQ found 65% of small businesses name customer referrals as their top source of new customers1. A review request process and a strong Google Business Profile may do more than any agency.
- One channel. If one channel brings the work, a specialist freelancer for that channel usually costs less than a multi-channel agency.
- Owner time available. An owner with three or four hours a week and general AI tools can cover the basics well, especially with a written plan to follow.
- Small budget. King Tide's guide advises against hiring anyone below NZD 1,000 to 1,500 a month. Below that, spend on the website and tracking first.

Where Flow AI fits
Flow AI is an AI marketing transformation practice: the strategy, the systems and the agents that run a marketing function, engineered end to end. It is closest to the last row of the comparison table. Amber Lan builds the systems, they run on your own accounts, and she reviews the work before it ships. The skill library shows the systems openly.
It starts with a written scope that names the first system to install. Each build is scoped and priced per project.
The short version
An AI marketing agency is worth paying for when several channels need to run every week and nobody inside has the hours. Before signing, ask to see the system run, get a written price and scope, and confirm that the pages, data and automations stay in your name.
When the work is mostly referrals, one channel or a small budget, a freelancer, AI tools or a written plan will usually go further. Pick the option that matches the work you have this year.

Questions owners ask
What does an AI marketing agency do?
An AI marketing agency plans and produces marketing using AI systems it runs on your behalf: drafting content, building pages, running ads, answering enquiries, tracking results and reporting. People set the direction and review the work. In practice the label also covers traditional agencies that use AI tools internally, so ask to see the systems before assuming the delivery model has changed.
How much does an AI marketing agency cost in New Zealand?
Few NZ AI marketing agencies publish prices. Growin, one that does, listed a Launch package at NZD 1,500 setup plus NZD 500 a month plus GST as of October 2026, covering ads and lead intake. Broader agency retainers run NZD 500 to 10,000 or more a month by Jelly Digital's 2026 estimate, depending on how many channels are covered.
What is an AEO or AI SEO agency?
An AEO or AI SEO agency works on how a business appears in AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews, as well as in ordinary search. The work usually covers page structure, schema markup, clear answers to customer questions and consistent business details across the web. A good one reports which AI answers mention you, as well as rankings.
How can I tell if an agency really uses AI?
Ask to see a system run on a real business: the inputs it reads, the output it produces and where a person reviews it. Then check whether the price and turnaround reflect it. If the retainer is the same as a traditional agency's and billed by hours, AI is probably saving the agency time while the service you receive stays the same.
Is an AI marketing agency better than a freelancer?
It depends on the job. A good freelancer is often the better buy for one clear skill, such as ads or copywriting, at NZD 50 to 150 an hour on 2026 NZ estimates. An AI marketing agency suits a business that needs several channels kept running every week with consistent reporting, which one freelancer's hours rarely stretch to cover.
What is the best AEO agency for a small business?
The best AEO agency for a small business is one that shows its own work being cited in AI answers, explains the changes it will make to your site in plain language, leaves those changes on your own domain and reports which questions now return your business. Prefer a short fixed-scope project over a long retainer for the first round.
