What is answer engine optimisation?
Answer engine optimisation is the practice of making a business easy for AI systems to find, understand and recommend when someone asks them a question. Classic search hands back a list of links. An answer engine writes the reply itself and names a few sources along the way. AEO is the work of being one of those names.
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of shaping a business's website, facts and reputation so AI answer engines can find it, trust it and cite or recommend it in the answers they write.
The term predates ChatGPT, when it meant featured snippets and voice assistants. Since 2023 answer engines have written full paragraphs and recommended named businesses, so the job has grown into shaping how an AI describes you. The glossary entry for AEO has the one-line version.
For a 5 to 50 person business, AEO comes down to four questions. Can the AI crawlers read your site? Are the facts about you (what you do, where, for whom, roughly what it costs) written plainly and the same everywhere? Do your pages answer the questions customers ask, in their words? And do other sites mention you, so the AI has a reason to believe what you say about yourself?
Which tools count as answer engines?
An answer engine is any search or chat tool that replies with a written answer instead of a page of links. In 2026 the ones that matter for a small business are ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Claude. Each pulls from the live web differently, so each rewards slightly different work.
| Answer engine | Where its live web results come from | What a business can check |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google's own search index, under the normal Search rules | Your pages are indexed in Google Search Console |
| ChatGPT search | Partner search providers, with Microsoft (Bing) named by OpenAI, plus OpenAI's own search crawler | Your site is indexed in Bing Webmaster Tools and robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot |
| Microsoft Copilot | Bing | Bing Webmaster Tools and a Bing Places listing |
| Perplexity | Its own crawler and index | robots.txt allows PerplexityBot |
Two free consoles, Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, cover most of these engines. OpenAI's help page on ChatGPT search says it sends rewritten queries to partner search providers and names Microsoft (Bing) among them1. It may also pass a general IP-based location, so "electrician near me" becomes a local search.
Why AEO matters for a small business now
AEO matters now because a growing share of searches end inside the answer. People still search, and Google's query volume is still rising, but fewer of those searches send anyone to a website. When the answer is where the customer stops, being named in it does the job a page one ranking used to do.
Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 Google searches by 900 US adults in March 2025 and found people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when one did not2. Only 1% of visits included a click on a link inside the summary itself. SparkToro's 2026 study, built on Similarweb clickstream data from January to April 2026, found 68.01% of US Google searches ended with zero clicks3, up from 60.45% in 2024. Both are US figures. No equivalent New Zealand measurement exists yet (the glossary defines zero-click search).
Volume is a different story. In February 2024, Gartner predicted traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 20264 as people moved to chatbots. That was a prediction made in early 2024. Google's reported numbers since then point the other way: on Alphabet's Q2 2025 earnings call, Sundar Pichai said AI Overviews had more than 2 billion monthly users and drive over 10% more queries for the types of queries that show them5. People are searching more and clicking less.
The chat tools are mainstream too. OpenAI said at DevDay 2026 that its products reach a collective 1.2 billion weekly users6, a figure covering all of its products, ChatGPT included. OpenAI's own study of 1.5 million ChatGPT conversations, published in September 2025, found 49% of consumer messages were people asking for information or advice7.
New Zealand follows the same pattern. InternetNZ's Aotearoa Internet Insights 2025, a survey of 1,003 New Zealand adults run in late 2025, found 55% had used AI in search engines and 53% had used AI chatbots in the past year8. And PwC New Zealand's 2026 study of 1,000 Kiwi consumers who already use AI to shop found 44% say AI has reduced their use of search engines when researching purchases9. That sample is AI users only, but they are the customers comparing suppliers before they call.
How do AI answer engines choose what to cite?
Most answer engines search before they write. They split the question into narrower queries, fetch pages from an index, pull out the passages that answer each part, and write a reply citing a handful. A page gets cited when the engine can reach it and it answers the narrow query plainly from a source that looks trustworthy.
That splitting step is often called query fan-out. Ask "who should I use to replace my hot water cylinder in Tauranga?" and the engine may search separately for replacement costs, licensed plumbers in Tauranga and reviews of the names it finds. A pricing page, a Tauranga service page and recent reviews give it material at each step.
Ranking well in Google helps, but it does not decide the result. Ahrefs' own analysis of 15,000 prompts in 2025 found only 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot ranked in Google's top 10 for the same prompt10 (8% for ChatGPT alone). Inside Google, Ahrefs' March 2026 update, covering 863,000 keyword results, found 37.9% of pages cited in AI Overviews ranked in the top 10 for that keyword, and 31.0% ranked outside the top 10011. Ahrefs sells SEO software, so read these as one vendor's data. The direction is clear all the same: engines cite passages from well beyond page one.
Reputation off your own site carries real weight. An Ahrefs correlation study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions had the strongest link to AI Overview visibility (0.664), well ahead of backlinks (0.218)12. Correlation is weaker evidence than an experiment, though it fits how the engines behave: they lean on what other people say about a business.
An engine is more likely to cite a business when:
- It can fetch the page: crawlers are allowed and the text is in the HTML when the page loads.
- A passage on the page answers the narrow question in a sentence or two that make sense on their own.
- The facts about the business match across its site, its listings and directories, which the glossary calls NAP consistency.
- Other sources mention it: reviews, local press, industry bodies, YouTube.
What does the research say works?
The strongest evidence comes from the 2024 paper that named generative engine optimisation. Aggarwal and colleagues (Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi, KDD 2024) tested page edits across 10,000 queries and found the right changes lifted a source's visibility in AI answers by up to 40%13. The winning edits were plain writing changes.
The best performers were adding quotations, adding statistics and citing sources, each with a relative improvement of 30 to 40%, while keyword stuffing offered little to no improvement14.
One finding matters a lot for small sites. In the same benchmark, citing sources lifted visibility by 115.1% for websites ranked fifth in search results, while the top-ranked site's visibility fell by 30.3% on average. That result comes from a lab benchmark of simulated searches, so treat it as a sign of direction. It suggests a well-sourced page from a smaller site can beat a vague page from a bigger one.
Translated into page edits for a small business:
- Put a number on claims you can stand behind, such as your typical price range for a job and what moves it, and say where it comes from.
- Quote a named person, such as the owner, a licensed tradesperson or a customer with permission.
- Link to the regulation, standard or study a claim relies on.
- Write the way a customer asks, without repeating keywords.
How is AEO different from SEO and GEO?
SEO earns a place in a list of links. AEO earns a mention inside a written answer. GEO is the research name for the same goal in AI engines that generate text. They share one foundation, and Google says AI Overviews need nothing beyond normal SEO best practice, so AEO is best treated as an extension of SEO.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aims for | A high position in search results | Being cited or recommended in an AI answer | Being included and quoted in generated answers |
| Shows up in | Google and Bing results pages | ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews, Copilot, Gemini | The same AI engines |
| Rewards | Relevance, links, technical health | Direct answers, consistent facts, mentions elsewhere | Sourced, quotable passages |
| Measured by | Rankings, clicks, Search Console | Prompt logs, AI referrals, enquiries | Visibility in AI responses |
Google Search Central's guidance on AI features says no special schema.org markup, AI text file or extra markup is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and there are no requirements beyond core SEO15. That is fair, and it is the right place to start. The AEO work beyond core SEO mostly happens off Google: Bing indexing for ChatGPT and Copilot, crawler rules for OpenAI and Perplexity, and the reviews and mentions every engine weighs.
The full comparison, with which one to fund first, is in AEO vs SEO vs GEO: what is the difference?
What can a small business do about AEO this month?
A small business can cover most of AEO without a developer by working through five areas in order: let the AI crawlers in, write down the facts about the business, build pages that answer real questions, earn proof and mentions elsewhere, then add structured data. Each step depends on the one before.
- Let the crawlers in. Check robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot and Bingbot, and that your host is not blocking AI crawlers. Flow AI's free AI crawler access check tests fourteen AI crawlers against robots.txt, page tags and server headers.
- Write down the facts. One page stating the name, services, area, hours, credentials and typical prices, matched exactly on your Google Business Profile, Bing Places and directories.
- Answer the questions. Open each important page with a 40 to 60 word answer to the question it targets, phrase headings the way customers ask, and add the numbers, quotes and sources the research rewards.
- Earn proof elsewhere. Recent reviews, an industry association listing, a local news story, a short YouTube walkthrough. The guide on how to get your business mentioned by ChatGPT covers this step in depth.
- Add structured data. LocalBusiness or Organization schema markup that repeats the facts from step two in a form machines read without guessing.
Each area breaks into specific tasks in the AEO checklist for small business, which most owners can work through in a week.
How do you measure AEO?
Measure AEO with four habits while the tools mature: a monthly log of what the main engines say when asked your customers' questions, AI referral visits in your analytics, Search Console trends, and enquiries where the customer says an AI suggested you. No tool yet reports AI visibility as reliably as Search Console reports Google rankings.
The prompt log does most of the work. Write 15 to 20 questions a real customer would ask, such as "best accountant for a small café in Wellington" or "how much does a heat pump install cost in Auckland", and run them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google each month. Record whether you are named, who else is, and which pages get cited. Answers vary between runs, so judge the trend over three months.
In Google Analytics 4, visits from AI tools show as referrals from domains such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Numbers are usually small, because many people read the answer and phone without clicking, so add "an AI assistant like ChatGPT" to the "how did you hear about us?" options.
Being cited seems to help the clicks that remain. Seer Interactive's September 2025 update, covering 3,119 search terms across 42 client organisations, found brands cited inside an AI Overview earned 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than brands not cited16. Seer is an agency reporting its own clients' data, so read it as a direction of travel.
What does AEO look like for New Zealand and Australian businesses?
For most New Zealand and Australian small businesses AEO is local. A customer asks an AI tool for a builder in Hamilton or a physio in Brisbane, and the engine searches business listings, reviews and service pages. The same local signals that drive Google Maps carry most of the weight, with Bing's index mattering more than its market share suggests.
Bing is the overlooked part. Statcounter's September 2026 data gives Google 89.02% of New Zealand search engine market share and Bing 7.71%17, and Australia looks similar at 87.9% for Google and 9.17% for Bing18. Because ChatGPT search and Copilot both draw on Bing, a missing Bing Places listing or an unindexed site costs more than that share suggests.
The local AI habit is growing fastest where the data exists. BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, of 1,002 US adults, found 45% had used ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% the year before19. BrightLocal sells local SEO software and the sample is American, so treat it as an early signal. Its follow-up found 88% of people who use AI for local recommendations check the sources the AI cites20, which brings it back to reviews and listings.
The local groundwork (Google Business Profile, reviews, suburb pages, NZ directories) is covered in SEO for small business in New Zealand. For the wider picture of AI across a marketing function, start with the guide to AI marketing for small business in NZ.
Where Flow AI fits
Flow AI is an AI marketing transformation practice: the strategy, the systems and the agents that run a marketing function, engineered end to end. Search and AI search is often the first system it installs, through the AI search sprint, and the written scope names whether that is the right first step for your business.
The tools behind the work are public. The free agent templates include the AI crawler access check and a full GEO audit, and the open-source GEO skills sit in the Flow AI skill library for anyone who wants to install and run them on their own site.
The short version
Answer engine optimisation is the work of being named when an AI tool answers a customer's question. It rests on SEO and adds four habits: open your site to AI crawlers, keep your business facts identical everywhere, write pages that answer questions in the first paragraph, and earn mentions and reviews on other sites.
InternetNZ found 55% of New Zealanders used AI in search engines in the past year. A business that does the groundwork now gives every engine what it needs to recommend it, and the same work pays back in ordinary Google search.

Questions owners ask
Is answer engine optimisation replacing SEO?
AEO sits on top of SEO and depends on it. Google says pages need no special markup to appear in AI Overviews beyond normal SEO best practice, and ChatGPT search draws on partner search indexes including Bing. A site that search engines cannot crawl or index will struggle in AI answers too. Treat AEO as the extra layer: answer-first pages, consistent facts, and mentions on other sites.
Does AEO work for a local business, or only for big brands?
It works for local businesses, and the local version is simpler. When someone asks an AI tool for a plumber or a physio nearby, the engine runs a local search and leans on business listings, reviews and service pages. A complete Google Business Profile, matching details on Bing Places and directories, recent reviews and one page per service and area cover most of it.
How long does answer engine optimisation take to work?
The access fixes, such as unblocking AI crawlers and getting indexed in Bing, can show up within weeks once the engines recrawl your site. Mentions on other sites and a body of answer-first pages take months, as they do in SEO. Run the same prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google each month and compare, because single answers vary from run to run.
How much does AEO cost a small business?
The first round costs mostly time. Checking robots.txt, claiming Bing Places, rewriting page openings and asking for reviews need no software. Free tools cover the checks: Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Google's Rich Results Test and Flow AI's free AI crawler access check. Paid AI visibility trackers exist, but a monthly manual prompt log is enough for a business of 5 to 50 staff to start.
Do I need an llms.txt file for AEO?
It is optional. No major AI provider has said it uses llms.txt to choose sources, and Ahrefs' 2026 study of 137,210 domains found 97% of published llms.txt files received zero requests in a month. It takes ten minutes to add, so it does no harm, but it belongs at the end of the list, after crawler access, facts, answer pages and reviews.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Very nearly. GEO, generative engine optimisation, comes from a 2024 research paper and describes optimising content for AI engines that write answers. AEO is the older industry term, first used for featured snippets and voice assistants, now applied to the same AI tools. Most practitioners use the two interchangeably, and the work for a small business is the same under either name.
