The key numbers on marketing engineer and AI marketing jobs in 2026

For anyone hiring or job hunting in New Zealand, the headline is simple. Employers increasingly ask for AI skills in marketing roles, while the marketing engineer title itself has yet to appear in local job ads. Each number below was opened and checked at its source on 8 October 2026, and each names who measured it.

How much demand is there for AI marketing skills in New Zealand?

Demand is rising quickly from a small base. SEEK's August 2026 report found AI skills in 4.0% of all New Zealand job ads, up 93.3% on a year earlier, and Marketing & Communications ranks second of all job classifications for AI mentions. Overall New Zealand job ads were 9.7% higher than in August 2025.

The share climbed through 2026. SEEK's April 2026 NZ report found AI keywords in 2.9% of job ads, with total ads up 13.1% year on year5. By August the share was 4.0%.

April 20262.9%AI mentions up 5.5% on the month (no share published)+13.1%
July 20263.7% (Australia 2.1%)9.2% of ads mention AINo national figure published
August 20264.0%9.8% of ads mention AI, second of all classifications+9.7%

By classification in August, ICT leads at 17.6% of ads mentioning AI. Marketing & Communications is next at 9.8%, just ahead of Consulting & Strategy at 9.3%. Roughly one marketing ad in ten on SEEK NZ now asks for AI skills, and agentic AI is among the most-mentioned skill types.

Skills lag use. Hays New Zealand reported in September 2026 that 60% of technology professionals regularly use AI tools, only 22% have had formal training or support, and 82% of organisations report capability gaps6. Marketing teams hiring for AI skills compete for that small trained pool.

How does Australia compare?

Australia's job market is softer and slower to ask for AI. SEEK's July 2026 Australian report showed job ads 6.0% lower than a year earlier, with AI skills in 2.1% of ads, while New Zealand stood at 3.7% that month. Marketing & Communications still ranks second for AI mentions in Australia, at 7.3%.

Australian AI-skill mentions are still growing, up 60.4% year on year in SEEK's July report, against New Zealand's 93.3% in August (different months, so treat the comparison as indicative). In both countries marketing is the second most AI-hungry classification.

Advertised pay for neighbouring marketing roles is similar in local currency; the pay table below sets the two markets side by side.

What are these jobs called in New Zealand and Australian job ads?

Locally, the work is advertised under older or broader titles. A SEEK NZ search on 8 October 2026 found no live ad titled marketing engineer, GTM engineer or growth engineer in its leading results. The closest matches were marketing technology and lifecycle roles that ask for AI and automation skills.

SEEK matches search words loosely, so "marketing engineer" returned 443 ads and "GTM engineer" 182, mostly marketing managers and software engineers. The nearest title was a GTM Lead in Mount Eden, classified under Sales. Ads describing the work look like these:

In this market, the skills inside an ad are a better search key than its title.

How is the marketing engineer role family changing worldwide?

Overseas, the work is settling into two lanes: people who deploy AI inside marketing teams, and GTM engineers who build pipeline systems. Around them, AI search work is becoming a specialism of its own, and narrower titles such as content engineer and lifecycle engineer are being folded into the broader roles.

The broader GTM market is shrinking while the AI end grows. Kyle Poyar's State of GTM Hiring H1 2026 (Growth Unhinged, May 2026, Sumble data on US B2B companies) found GTM job posts down 15% year on year, while AI-native companies grew GTM hiring by nearly 50%14. The same report found growth marketing was the only marketing role with more postings than a year earlier, and GTM engineering headcount had doubled.

The title counts are still small. Onfire estimated roughly 1,200 people on LinkedIn held the GTM engineer title in May 2026; for marketing engineer, the Journal's 173 starters is the most specific count. The Keyword, a marketing news site, concluded the evidence "points toward a genuine role that is still early"15. The fuller definition of the role is in the guide to what a marketing engineer is.

What do marketing engineer and AI marketing roles pay in New Zealand?

Nobody yet publishes a New Zealand salary for the marketing engineer or GTM engineer title. The nearest verified guides are SEEK's advertised salary bands for neighbouring roles, which put a head of marketing at NZ$160,000 to NZ$170,000, and recruiter estimates near NZ$195,000 for senior AI roles. SEEK's bands are "full-time salary ranges disclosed by employers on SEEK job ads", with Australian figures from the matching au.seek.com pages. Some include superannuation.

Expect New Zealand employers to benchmark a marketing engineer against the growth manager and head of marketing bands, and against data engineer pay for the build half. For contrast, Bloomberry put the median posted US GTM engineer salary at US$127,500.

Which skills do employers name in these ads?

Four skill groups recur across the ads and datasets checked for this page: SQL and data work, a CRM such as Salesforce or HubSpot, workflow tools such as Zapier, n8n or Clay, and hands-on building with language models such as Claude. Most ads also ask the hire to coach colleagues, because few marketers have formal AI training.

  • SQL and data. Bloomberry found SQL in 38% of GTM engineering postings. Plaid asks for SQL and Tableau, Figma lists SQL on Snowflake or BigQuery as a plus, and Air New Zealand names SQL or Python.
  • CRM. In Bloomberry's sample, HubSpot appeared in 52% of postings and Salesforce in 45%. Plaid's ad covers Salesforce integrations, and Stripe's names Marketo and Salesforce.
  • Workflow tools. Bloomberry ranked Clay as the most common tool, with Zapier at 39% and n8n at 28%. Figma asks for Gumloop, n8n, Workato or Zapier.
  • Language models. Onfire found 95% of the GTM engineer postings it reviewed asked for AI or LLM expertise. Stripe names Claude Code and Codex; Lorikeet named Claude Code and Cursor.
  • Teaching others. Stripe's hire is embedded with 25 to 45 marketers; Figma's coaches marketers toward self-sufficiency.

The two Air New Zealand ads lean on customer data platforms such as Braze and Hightouch, where the overseas GTM ads lean on prospecting tools such as Clay and Apollo. The guide to AI for marketers sets out a starting path, and AI agents for marketing covers the systems these ads describe.

What does this mean for job seekers and hiring managers?

Job seekers in New Zealand should search by skill keywords and bring a running system as evidence, since local ads rarely use the new titles. Hiring managers should describe the systems the person will build and benchmark pay against neighbouring roles, because the title alone will attract few local applicants. Both sides gain from naming tools plainly.

For job seekers

  • Search SEEK and LinkedIn for tool names (SQL, HubSpot, Braze, Clay, Claude) as well as titles. The relevant ads sit under marketing technology and lifecycle titles.
  • Show one working system with its weekly output. Stripe's ad measures success by workflows permanently changed, and Figma's asks the hire to track adoption of the agents they build.
  • Expect the interview to test judgement: Air New Zealand's data ad asks for critical evaluation of AI outputs.

For hiring managers

  • Write the first 90 days into the ad: the systems the hire will build.
  • Publish a pay range; these roles have no local benchmark yet.
  • Budget for the hire to train others. With only 22% of technology professionals reporting formal AI training or support, per Hays, the person you hire will likely become the team's teacher.

Methodology and caveats

Every figure on this page was opened at its source on 8 October 2026. SEEK figures are job-ad data, and the salary bands are advertised ranges. Hays and Talent International are recruiters, and Bloomberry, Onfire and Profound sell products to this market. Several widely repeated numbers could not be confirmed at source and were left out.

  • Vendors. Bloomberry sells job-postings data and Onfire sells GTM software; Profound, which popularised the marketing engineer title, runs a job board for it. Their figures are labelled as vendor data.
  • Geography. Growth Unhinged's data covers US B2B companies, and Bloomberry does not state its countries. Neither has a New Zealand breakdown.
  • The exact title. No New Zealand source counts marketing engineer or GTM engineer jobs. The SEEK title check covered leading results on one day, so an ad could have been missed. An Auckland GTM engineer ad seen in aggregator snippets (August 2026) could not be opened, so it is not counted.
  • The Wall Street Journal figures (173 starters, 29% growth in LinkedIn listings in 2025) are taken from the Journal's 30 September 2026 report, which cites Live Data Technologies and LinkedIn. They match the marketing engineer guide.
  • Dropped. A Robert Half survey of New Zealand hiring managers on AI pay was reachable only through secondhand coverage; PwC's NZ AI Jobs Barometer refused automated access; a widely quoted count of 3,000+ GTM engineer listings on LinkedIn had no reachable primary source.

For wider AI adoption figures in both countries, see the AI marketing statistics for Australia and New Zealand. Definitions of agentic AI and answer engine optimisation are in the glossary.

Where Flow AI fits

Flow AI is an AI marketing transformation practice: the strategy, the systems and the agents that run a marketing function, engineered end to end. Amber Lan is an AI marketing engineer in Auckland who builds those systems and keeps the judgement over what they send. The skill library is public, so you can inspect the work first.

Hiring managers and recruiters with a senior marketing engineer or GTM engineer role can talk to Amber about the role. Teams that want a system built, scoped in writing first, can talk to Amber.

Questions owners ask

Are there marketing engineer jobs in New Zealand?

Under that exact title, very few. A SEEK NZ search on 8 October 2026 found no live ad titled marketing engineer in its leading results. The work itself is advertised: Air New Zealand, for example, listed a Marketing Data and Technology Specialist in October 2026 asking for AI, automation, SQL and customer data platforms. Search by skills such as SQL, HubSpot or Claude to find these roles.

What does a GTM engineer earn in Australia?

No Australian salary survey publishes a figure for the GTM engineer title yet, and the Sydney GTM engineer ad checked for this page did not show pay. The nearest SEEK Australia bands in October 2026 were AUD 95,000 to 115,000 for a growth manager and AUD 120,000 to 140,000 for a data engineer. Bloomberry, a vendor, put the median GTM engineer salary among postings that showed pay at US$127,500.

Which AI skills do New Zealand marketing employers ask for?

SEEK's August 2026 report listed agentic AI among the most-mentioned AI skill types in NZ job ads. Individual marketing ads checked for this page asked for applied AI and automation, AI-powered customer experiences, SQL or Python, and platforms such as Braze, Hightouch and Snowflake. Employers also value people who can evaluate AI output critically and train colleagues, because formal AI training remains rare.

Is there more demand for GTM engineers or marketing engineers?

On the available counts, GTM engineer is the larger title. Bloomberry, a vendor, analysed 1,000 GTM engineering postings and found new GTM engineering jobs up 205% year on year. The Wall Street Journal reported that only 173 people started jobs titled marketing engineer in the 12 months to August 2026. Both are small, mostly American, and neither count covers New Zealand.

Do AI skills raise pay in New Zealand marketing?

There is no verified New Zealand figure for an AI pay premium in marketing roles. Hays reported average technology pay rises of 3.8% in its FY26/27 Salary Guide, and Talent International gives indicative estimates of around NZ$195,000 to NZ$196,000 for senior AI roles such as agent architect. Both describe technology roles, so treat them as signals for the build half of a marketing engineer's job.

Can I quote the figures on this page?

Yes. The figures are free to quote with attribution to Amber Lan, Flow AI (flowai.co.nz), October 2026. Please also link the original source named next to each number, since SEEK, Hays and the other publishers own their data.
