What does an AI consultant cost in New Zealand and Australia?

An AI consultant in Auckland costs about NZD 140 to 190 an hour on contract in 2026, according to Robert Walters, which is roughly NZD 1,120 to 1,520 for an eight-hour day. Australian recruiter data for AI engineers runs AUD 900 to 1,200 a day. Providers that publish small-business packages start at a few hundred dollars for a workshop.

An AI consultant is an outside adviser who helps a business decide where AI fits, chooses the tools, plans or builds the first systems, and trains staff to use them safely.

Few AI consultants publish their rates. This guide uses recruiter salary guides for what the hours are worth and published price pages from named New Zealand and Australian providers, each labelled as one provider's price. It also covers the government programmes that change the net cost in both countries. Every figure links to the page it came from, and the AI marketing cost guide for Australia and New Zealand sets these rates against agencies, freelancers and hires.

How do AI consultants charge: hourly, day rate, fixed project or retainer?

AI consultants charge in four ways. An hourly rate suits short advice and fixes, and a day rate suits workshops and on-site discovery. A fixed project fee suits a defined deliverable such as an assessment or a first build, and a retainer suits ongoing support. Many consultants use more than one.

Pricing modelHow it worksBest forRisk for the buyerWhat to ask for
HourlyBilled for hours workedAdvice, reviews of a plan, small fixesThe total is open-endedA written estimate or a cap
Day rateBilled per day; agree how many hours a day meansWorkshops, on-site discovery, short sprintsDays can stretchThe number of days and what each day produces
Fixed projectOne price for a defined deliverableAssessments, roadmaps, a first automationChanges outside the scope are charged separatelyWhat is out of scope, and the rate for changes
RetainerA monthly fee for a set number of hours or a support levelOngoing advice, monitoring, staff questionsPaying for hours you do not useWhether hours roll over, and the notice period

To compare across models, convert everything to an effective hourly rate: divide a fixed fee or retainer by the hours the consultant expects to spend. Ask for that hour estimate in writing. A NZD 5,000 project that takes 25 hours works out at NZD 200 an hour, and the same fee over 40 hours is NZD 125.

What do the different types of AI consultant do?

AI consultants split into four types by the work they do. Strategy consultants find where AI fits and write the plan. Implementation consultants set up tools and change processes. Automation consultants build workflows and agents, and trainers teach staff to use AI safely. Many small providers do two or more, so ask which work you are paying for.

TypeWhat they deliverUsual pricing modelWhat you should hold at the end
StrategyOpportunity assessment, roadmap, tool choice, AI use policyFixed projectA written plan with owners and dates

Automation and agentsWorkflows and AI agents connected to your systemsFixed build fee plus monthly supportWorkflows, prompts and documentation in your own accounts
TrainingWorkshops, playbooks, prompt libraries, follow-up supportDay rate or per sessionTrained staff and reference material

The split shows up in recruiter data too. Robert Walters lists an AI consultant and an AI engineer as separate roles in Auckland, with the consultant's contract rate a little higher. If most of the work is building, the guide to AI agent development costs in New Zealand breaks a build into people time, model usage, platform fees and upkeep. The guide to AI agencies and AI consultants in NZ covers when an agency suits better than a consultant.

What do AI consultants charge in New Zealand?

In Auckland, Robert Walters' 2026 salary guide lists AI consultant contract rates of NZD 140 to 190 an hour, averaging NZD 165, and permanent AI consultants at NZD 140,000 to 180,000 a year. Published small-business prices are rarer: one Auckland provider lists a two to four hour AI workshop at NZD 795 plus GST.

Robert Walters' 2026 Salary Guide lists Auckland AI consultants at NZD 140 to 190 an hour on contract, with the average easing from NZD 175 in 2025 to NZD 165 in 2026, and AI engineers at NZD 130 to 180 an hour1. For comparison, the same guide lists Auckland business analysts at NZD 100 to 120 an hour and project managers at NZD 120 to 130. At eight hours a day, the AI consultant range is about NZD 1,120 to 1,520 a day. The guide draws on more than 5,500 survey responses and over 100,000 advertised roles across Australia and New Zealand.

Those are rates for contractors placed by a recruiter, mostly into larger organisations. Independent consultants who sell to small businesses set their own prices, and most quote after a call. A few publish them. The Marketing Guy, based in Takapuna, lists an in-person AI Opportunity Workshop of two to four hours at NZD 795 plus GST2, with its follow-on programme priced on application. EZ-AI, an Auckland provider, lists automation builds at NZD 500 to 5,000 plus GST and AI assistants and agents at NZD 3,000 to 12,000 plus GST, with small jobs billed hourly at a rate agreed upfront3. Each of these is one provider's published price.

A permanent hire is the other route. At NZD 140,000 to 180,000 a year for an AI consultant in Auckland, plus employer KiwiSaver, which Inland Revenue confirms rose to a default 3.5% on 1 April 20264, it makes sense for a business with a year of AI work queued up. For most small businesses, a defined project is the sensible first step.

What do AI consultants charge in Australia?

Australian recruiter data puts AI engineer contractors at AUD 900 to 1,200 a day, according to Hays, and permanent AI engineers at AUD 145,000 to 200,000 or more. Published small-business prices include a AUD 990 plus GST opportunity assessment in Sydney and half-day workshops from AUD 3,500. Free government-funded support is also available through AI Adopt Centres.

Hays' April 2026 release puts Australian AI engineers at AUD 900 to 1,200 a day on contract and AUD 145,000 to 200,000 or more permanent5, drawing on its Tech Talent Explorer research updated in December 2025. Robert Walters' 2026 guide lists Queensland AI engineer contracts at AUD 90 to 110 an hour and permanent New South Wales AI engineers at AUD 150,000 to 170,000 or more, and its New South Wales tables exclude superannuation. At the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's 15 October 2026 rate of AUD 0.81 per NZD6, Hays' day range is about NZD 1,120 to 1,490, close to the Auckland AI consultant range.

Some Australian providers publish small-business packages on their own pages:

Each is one provider's published price, useful as a reference point. Before paying for a first assessment, check the free option. The National AI Centre said in August 2026 that AI Adopt Centres offer free support to eligible Australian organisations, including one-on-one consultations through SMEC AI for businesses in all industries9.

What does an AI consultant cost for a small business?

For a 5 to 50 person business, a sensible first engagement is a fixed-price assessment or workshop, followed by one implementation project. Published ANZ prices for that first step run from NZD 795 to about AUD 5,000 plus GST. In New Zealand, the AI Advisory Pilot can co-fund up to half the cost through an approved provider.

The business.govt.nz page says the AI Advisory Pilot covers up to 50% of eligible costs, including up to NZD 2,500 for an AI roadmap and up to NZD 12,500 for implementation, for businesses with an NZBN and fewer than 50 full-time employees, open until 30 June 202710. A roadmap costing NZD 5,000 could therefore cost the business NZD 2,500 if the application succeeds and the provider is one the pilot accepts. The same page says the pilot does not fund work completed before funding approval. The guide to New Zealand's AI Advisory Pilot covers eligibility, exclusions and how to apply through a Regional Business Partner Network growth advisor. Flow AI is not an approved provider for the pilot, so its work cannot be funded through it.

A simple budget sequence for a small business:

  1. Pick one process that wastes the most hours each week, and write down how it runs today.
  2. Buy a fixed-price assessment or workshop focused on that process, and check whether a grant or free centre can cover it.
  3. Fund one implementation project with a written scope, a measurable outcome and accounts in your name.
  4. Add training once the first change is live, so staff learn on a system they already use.

Good consulting output is concrete: a short written plan with owners and dates, a list of approved tools, a privacy check, and one working change. If the work touches customer data, New Zealand's Privacy Commissioner recommends a privacy impact assessment before you start using AI tools, updated regularly11, and a consultant should help you write it.

How do you compare AI consultant quotes?

Compare AI consultant quotes on the effective hourly rate, the deliverables you will hold at the end, who does the work and the GST basis. Convert every fixed fee to hours, list what each quote leaves out, and add GST to any plus-GST figure if your business is not registered: 15% in New Zealand, 10% in Australia.

Example quote (invented numbers)Total (excl. GST)Hours estimatedEffective hourly rateWhat you hold at the end
Consultant A: fixed-price assessmentNZD 4,00020NZD 200Written roadmap and tool list
Consultant B: three days at NZD 1,300NZD 3,90024About NZD 163Workshop, roadmap and one automation set up
Consultant C: three-month advisory retainer at NZD 1,500NZD 4,50030NZD 150Monthly advice calls, no build

The numbers are made up to show the method. Consultant C has the lowest hourly rate and leaves nothing working. Consultant B costs less in total than C and leaves a working automation, which makes it the stronger first buy here. The GST rates come from Inland Revenue, which states GST is charged at 15%12, and the ATO, which sets GST at 10% with registration required from AUD 75,000 of GST turnover13.

What should you ask an AI consultant before you sign?

Ask what you will hold at the end, who does the work, how hours and changes are billed, how customer data is handled and what working example you can see. A consultant who builds lasting capability answers these in writing within a week. Vague answers on ownership or data are the clearest reason to keep looking.

  1. What exactly will I have at the end, and in whose accounts? Plans, workflows, prompts and documentation should sit in your business's name.
  2. Who does the work? Ask whether any part is subcontracted, and where those people are based.
  3. How many hours does this quote assume? Then ask for the rate for changes outside the scope.
  4. Which AI tools will touch customer data? Ask where each one stores it and whether the consultant will help with a privacy impact assessment.
  5. Can I see a working example? A live or recorded run, with the human in the loop step visible, says more than a slide deck.
  6. Are you an approved AI Advisory Pilot provider? In Australia, ask whether an AI Adopt Centre could cover the first step for free.
  7. Is the price plus GST? Get it in writing so you compare like with like.

Red flags include guaranteed savings or revenue, no written scope, a long retainer before you have seen any deliverable, and results quoted with no client you can contact. The guide to choosing an AI marketing provider has a longer question list.

Where Flow AI fits

Flow AI provides AI marketing services for businesses in New Zealand and Australia. Amber Lan, an AI marketing engineer in Auckland, builds the AI agents that run search, content, outbound and reporting with your team, then hands them over. Flow AI is not an approved AI Advisory Pilot provider, so the pilot cannot co-fund its work.

Teams contract a build, which starts with a written scope and is priced per project. The AI automation consultant page explains what gets automated first, and the free agent templates show the kind of system a build leaves behind. Companies hiring a senior marketing engineer or GTM engineer can reach Amber through the hiring page.

The short version

AI consultants in Auckland charge about NZD 140 to 190 an hour on contract, or about NZD 1,120 to 1,520 a day, by Robert Walters' 2026 figures. Australian AI engineer contractors run AUD 900 to 1,200 a day by Hays' data. Published small-business packages in both countries start from a few hundred dollars for a workshop.

Convert every quote to an effective hourly rate, check what you will hold at the end, and look at the AI Advisory Pilot in New Zealand or an AI Adopt Centre in Australia before you pay full price for a first assessment.

Questions owners ask

What is the hourly rate for an AI consultant in New Zealand?

Robert Walters' 2026 salary guide lists AI consultants on contract in Auckland at NZD 140 to 190 an hour, with an average of NZD 165, down from an average of NZD 175 in 2025. Those are recruiter-placed contract rates. Independent consultants selling to small businesses set their own rates, and few publish them, so ask each one for an hourly rate and an hour estimate in writing.

How much does an AI consultant cost in Australia?

Hays' April 2026 data puts Australian AI engineer contractors at AUD 900 to 1,200 a day, and Robert Walters lists Queensland AI engineers at AUD 90 to 110 an hour. Some providers publish small-business packages: Complete AI in Sydney lists an AI Opportunity Assessment at AUD 990 plus GST. Check the AI Adopt Centres first, because the National AI Centre says they offer free support to eligible organisations.

Is a day rate or a fixed price better for AI consulting?

A fixed price works better when the deliverable can be written down in advance, such as an assessment, a roadmap or one automation, because you know the total before you start. A day rate suits discovery workshops and work whose scope only becomes clear on site. In both cases ask for the hours assumed, so you can compare quotes on an effective hourly rate.

What does an AI implementation consultant cost?

Implementation is mostly people time, so it follows contract rates: Robert Walters lists Auckland AI consultants at NZD 140 to 190 an hour and AI engineers at NZD 130 to 180 in 2026. One Auckland provider, EZ-AI, publishes automation builds at NZD 500 to 5,000 plus GST and AI assistants or agents at NZD 3,000 to 12,000 plus GST. Software subscriptions and upkeep are extra.

Can a government grant pay for an AI consultant in New Zealand?

Yes, through the AI Advisory Pilot, delivered by the Regional Business Partner Network. It covers up to 50% of eligible costs, including up to NZD 2,500 for an AI roadmap and NZD 12,500 for implementation, for businesses with an NZBN and fewer than 50 full-time employees, until 30 June 2027. Ask your growth advisor which providers are approved for the pilot before you commit. Flow AI is not an approved provider.

What should an AI consultant deliver for a small business?

A written plan that names the processes to change first, who owns each step and when it starts, plus a list of approved tools and a privacy check for any tool that touches customer data. The best engagements also leave at least one working change your staff already use, built in your accounts and documented so someone else can maintain it.
