What decides who ranks in local search and AI answers?
Two systems decide, and they read the same record. Google Maps ranks businesses by relevance, distance and prominence, mostly from the Business Profile and reviews. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI features search the web and name the businesses they can confirm across several sources: listings, directories, lists, reviews and the business's own pages.
Diagram, read as a list: One master record (name, area, phone, site) leads to Google, Bing, Apple profiles, Directories, lists, reviews, pages. Google, Bing, Apple profiles leads to Map pack, AI answers. Directories, lists, reviews, pages leads to AI answers. Map pack (relevance, distance, prominence). AI answers (names it can confirm).
Google's Business Profile help page says local results are "mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity"1, and that complete and accurate information makes a business more likely to show. OpenAI's help page on ChatGPT search says it rewrites prompts into queries for partner search providers, lists Microsoft among them, and requires sites to allow OAI-SearchBot2. So the work is one job with two payoffs: build a single, complete record of the business, then make it appear wherever both systems look.
For New Zealand and Australian businesses, three things differ from the American advice most guides repeat: the government register that anchors the record, the consumer law on reviews and lists, and the directories that rank. This guide covers each, then applies it to Auckland.
Claim the three profiles the engines read
Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business are the three listings every engine draws on. Google feeds Maps and AI Overviews. Bing feeds Copilot and the search behind ChatGPT. Apple feeds Apple Maps and Siri on every iPhone. All three are free to claim, and Bing can copy the Google profile once it is verified.
| Profile | Feeds | Share of search, Sep 2026 | Set up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Google Maps, Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode | NZ 89.02%, AU 87.9% | First, and verify it |
| Bing Places | Bing, Copilot, the Microsoft search behind ChatGPT | NZ 7.71%, AU 9.17% | Import from Google, then add the category and links |
| Apple Business | Apple Maps and the iPhone's own search | Not measured as search share | Claim the place card by hand with the same details |

Bing's share is small, but the assistants built on it are where many buying questions now start. Bing Places' help page says a listing imported from a verified Google profile is verified automatically and usually publishes in 7 to 12 days5, and warns that categories and Google UTM tags may not carry over. Set both by hand after the import.
Give each profile the most specific primary category, your real hours, a description in plain words and a website link tagged with UTM parameters (for example ?utm_source=bing&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=places) so your analytics show which listing sent the visit. If you travel to customers, hide the street address and list the areas you serve.
Anchor your details to the NZBN or the ABN record
Every listing should copy one master record: trading name, address or service area, phone and website, written the same way each time. In New Zealand the official version of that record is the NZBN register. In Australia it is your ABN record, shown publicly on ABN Lookup. Bring the register into line first, then copy it everywhere else.
The NZBN register lets a business update its trading name, trading areas, website, email, phone and addresses in MyNZBN6. In Australia, the Australian Business Register asks businesses to update their ABN details within 28 days of a change7, and requires the main business address to be a physical street address, not a PO box8. You can still hide that address on Google if you serve customers at their premises.
The test is simple. Search your old phone number and your old address. Every live result that still shows them is a listing that tells the engines two different stories about one business. Fix those before adding anything new. The glossary entry on NAP consistency sets out the format rules.
Earn reviews the way the law allows
Reviews are the part of prominence you can grow every week, and both countries regulate how. Ask every customer directly with your review link, reply to each review, and never post, buy, filter or reward reviews in ways that mislead. Recent penalties in both countries show regulators treat review manipulation as misleading conduct.
In New Zealand, the Commerce Commission says reviews must be genuine and must not mislead readers about the reviewer's overall message9. In August 2026 The TV Shop was ordered to pay $1.104 million for conduct that included staff reviews posted without disclosure and low ratings held back10.
In Australia, the ACCC says incentives for reviews must apply whether the review is positive or negative and must be clearly disclosed, and that suppressing or editing negative reviews may mislead11. The same page records the Federal Court ordering HealthEngine to pay $2.9 million, including for publishing misleading patient reviews.
A steady rhythm beats a burst. Ask on the day the work finishes, while the result is fresh, and keep the request the same for every customer.
Get onto the lists and directories AI answers cite
Assistants answer "who is the best..." questions mostly from other people's pages: directories, review platforms, industry member lists and articles that rank businesses in a city. Search your own service and city, note the directories and lists on page one, and get listed there with the master record. They are your market's citation set.
| Type | New Zealand | Australia |
|---|---|---|
| Government record | NZBN register | ABN Lookup |
| General directories | Yellow, Finda, Neighbourly | Yellow Pages, True Local, Localsearch |
| Trades and services | Builderscrack, NoCowboys | hipages, Oneflare, ServiceSeeking |
| Health | Healthpoint | HealthEngine, HotDoc |
| Professional and B2B | Industry body member search, Clutch, GoodFirms | Industry body member search, Clutch, GoodFirms |
| Membership | Regional chambers of commerce | State chambers of commerce |
To see which sources matter for your own questions, ask Perplexity the questions your customers ask, with a place in each, and open the numbered citations. Perplexity says it searches in real time and cites its sources12, so a domain that appears across several answers is one to be on.
Lists need one caution. Being named on an independent "best of" article helps, but a bought place presented as independent is a legal risk in New Zealand, as the Auckland section explains. Pay only where the payment is disclosed.
Write pages an answer engine can quote
Your own site confirms what the listings say. Give each core service a page, and each city you really serve a page with facts specific to it. Open each with a 40 to 80 word answer naming the business, the service, the place and who it is for. Add matching schema, allow the AI crawlers, and publish an llms.txt.
Answer engines lift short, self-contained passages. A first paragraph such as "Smith Electrical is a licensed electrician in Takapuna serving homes and small businesses across the North Shore, with same-day call-outs" is easy to quote. A paragraph that opens with a mission statement is not. Put the city and service in the page title and main heading, and price ranges in local currency where you can.
Mark the business up as the most specific schema.org type that fits (ProfessionalService, Plumber, AccountingService and so on) with the same name, phone and locality as the profiles, areaServed listing the places you cover, and sameAs links to each profile. Check robots.txt allows Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, and add an llms.txt file with a one-line description of the business. The AEO checklist covers the rest.
Ranking higher in Auckland
Auckland rewards precision. "Near me" means very different things in Albany and Ōtāhuhu, so set your Business Profile's service areas to the suburbs and areas you really serve, write one strong page per part of the city where most of your work comes from, and join the local lists Aucklanders and assistants trust.
Group your pages the way Aucklanders talk: the North Shore, West, East and South Auckland, the central isthmus, Rodney and Franklin. Google allows up to 20 service areas, within about two hours' drive of your base13, so a central city business might list Ponsonby, Grey Lynn, Parnell and Newmarket rather than the whole region. Then write prompts the way an Aucklander would, such as "good accountant for a café in Mt Eden", and check who is named.
Auckland also has the clearest warning on lists. On 5 October 2026 the Commerce Commission took Top Reviews and Auckland Magazine to the Auckland High Court, alleging they sold places on "The 10 Best" lists while presenting them as independent reviews by local staff writers14. If a list approaches you for a fee, ask whether the payment will be disclosed.
The better Auckland mentions come from real relationships: the Auckland Business Chamber, whose entry membership includes an online directory listing15, town centre business associations, local news and the clubs and schools you support. For the step-by-step Auckland version, with a 30-day checklist, read how Auckland businesses get recommended by ChatGPT and Google Maps.
A 60-day order of work
Sixty days is enough to put the whole record in place in either country. Do the register and Google first, because everything else copies them. Then Bing and Apple, then reviews and directories, then pages and a baseline you can measure against each month.
| When | Step | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Write the master record; update the NZBN or ABN details to match | One name, address or area, phone and website, written one way |
| Week 1 | Claim and verify the Google Business Profile; set category, service areas, hours and a UTM-tagged link | Profile verified and complete |
| Week 2 | Import into Bing Places, then set its category and link; claim Apple Business by hand | Both live with the same details |
| Weeks 2 to 4 | Ask every recent customer for a review; reply to each | A request sent the day each job finishes |
| Weeks 3 to 6 | List on the directories and lists that rank for your service and city | Each listing copies the master record |
| Weeks 4 to 8 | Service and city pages with a direct first paragraph, schema and llms.txt | Each page linked from the profiles |
| Week 8, then monthly | Ask five customer questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google; log who is named and what is cited | A sheet you compare each month |
Where Amber Lan fits
Amber Lan is an AI marketing engineer in Auckland who rebuilds the marketing function of New Zealand and Australian businesses around AI agents. Her search agent runs the audit behind this guide on a client's site and market, scores the local record and the AI answers, and writes the dated plan and the paste-ready listings. The AI search sprint lists what it delivers.
Each build starts with a written plan and a per-project price. Auckland businesses can read how local work runs on the page for AI marketing in Auckland, and Australian teams on AI marketing in Australia.
The short version
Local rankings and AI answers in New Zealand and Australia come from the same public record. Write one master record, match it on the NZBN or ABN register, and copy it into Google, Bing and Apple, the directories and lists that rank for your service, and your own pages.
Then earn genuine reviews every week, within the Commerce Commission's and the ACCC's rules, and check each month which sources the assistants cite. If you would like the whole record built and run with your team, ask Amber for a written plan.
Questions owners ask
Is local SEO different in Australia and New Zealand?
The mechanics are the same: Google decides map rankings from relevance, distance and prominence, and AI assistants name the businesses they can confirm across several sources. The differences are in the record and the rules. New Zealand businesses anchor their details on the NZBN register and follow the Commerce Commission on reviews; Australian businesses anchor on the ABN record and follow the ACCC. The directories that rank differ too, so check page one for your own service and city.
Do I need Bing Places if almost everyone uses Google?
Yes, for AI answers. Statcounter's September 2026 figures give Bing 7.71% of search in New Zealand and 9.17% in Australia, but OpenAI lists Microsoft among the search providers behind ChatGPT search, and Copilot runs on Bing. Bing Places can import a verified Google Business Profile, which Bing then verifies automatically, so it takes minutes once Google is done.
Can I offer customers a discount for leaving a review?
Only with care in Australia and rarely worth it in New Zealand. The ACCC says incentives must apply whether the review is positive or negative and must be clearly disclosed. New Zealand's Commerce Commission requires reviews to be genuine and not misleading, and in August 2026 The TV Shop was ordered to pay $1.104 million for conduct that included undisclosed staff reviews and holding back low ratings. Asking every customer, with no reward, is the safe route in both countries.
Should I pay to appear on a 'best of' list for my city?
Only where the payment is disclosed. In October 2026 the Commerce Commission took Top Reviews and Auckland Magazine to the High Court, alleging they sold places on 'The 10 Best' lists while presenting them as independent. Lists that rank for your service are worth being on, through genuine editorial inclusion, an honest submission or a disclosed sponsorship, because answer engines often cite them.
How long does it take to rank higher in local search?
Profiles and listings can be live within two weeks: Bing says an imported, already verified listing usually publishes in 7 to 12 days. Rankings for competitive searches take longer, typically a few months of steady reviews, matching details and useful pages. AI answers move at the speed of the sources they cite, so a new directory profile or list inclusion can show up within weeks.
